Legendary British musician David Bowie , author of classics like "Starman" and"Space Oddity" , has died at 69 years of cancer , reported Monday its Facebook page.

According to this message, the artist who popularized the "glam rock" in the 70s and 80s, died Sunday "peacefully, surrounded by his family after a courageous 18-month battle against cancer."

"Although many of you will share with us this loss, we ask respect for the privacy of the family during the match," adds the note, which also ran the official Twitter of Bowie.

His son, the filmmaker Duncan Jones , meanwhile confirmed the news on the social network.

"I'm sorry to say it's true. I'll be offline for a while. Much love to all, "he wrote.

The singer and multi-instrumentalist, known for his androgynous image and enigmatic especially in their time of greatest success, launched his latest album last Friday, coinciding with his 69th birthday.

Eve put on sale "Blackstar" , the twenty-fifth studio album, presented the music video of the song "Lazarus" a disturbing clip of about four minutes long in which Bowie appears blindfolded, levitating in the bed in a psychiatric hospital.

This last work, which contains only seven songs, has been well received by critics in the UK.

Born in the London neighborhood of Brixton in 1947 , the musician was married twice, the second with the model Iman, and had two children.
